From the Board Room

Welcome! The Chairman of the Board, Don Marden; President of the Good Will Home Association, Dave Kimball; and President of the National Alumni Association, Audrey Bunker would like to welcome you to our on-line updates, "From the Board Room". These are not minutes of the meeting, and should not be construed as such - but more of an overview of topics of interest for those of you who have expressed a desire to be kept informed of what is happening on campus.

February 2010

Overview:
The Board of Directors met on Saturday, February 27, 2010. The meeting covered all areas of business including:

General:

The trip to attend the FMCA rally in Brooksville, FL earlier this month was a wonderful experience. Bill and Ellie Skolfield hosted Lisa McGowan and Natalie Jones during the event and helped them navigate their way through thousands of motor coaches and several events. GWH was provided a booth in the vendor tent free of charge and were able to talk and/or provide information to several hundred people. Natalie was invited to speak at the Northeast Chapter FMCA meeting and was welcomed by a room full of friendly people who were very supportive and interested in the future of our organization. GWH has been invited to attend the Vermont Rally in July and the Northeast Chapter has offered to cover our registration, booth and room accommodations! The FMCA/Maine Wheels group is scheduled to be on campus May 20-23rd – and we look forward to spending time with them.

While in Florida and Georgia, Lisa and Natalie had the opportunity to meet with a couple of alumni and their family members. One family commented that Lisa and Dan (the child’s cottage parents) had “….saved their grandson’s life…” During a time in our history at GWH it is encouraging to hear directly from families these words of support and an acknowledgement of the good work that has been done on this campus for so long.

Natalie and Lisa also had the chance to spend some time with Dr. and Mrs. Hennigar which was a special treat during the trip. It was obvious that Good Will-Hinckley is never far from the Hennigar’s thoughts and prayers, and we continue to appreciate their advice and counsel.

Update from the Strategic Action Committee (SAC):
The committee provided a confidential ‘Recommendations Report’ to the Board for consideration and discussion. Further opportunities for question and answer sessions and discussions will take place over the next two weeks. Decisions by the Board on the recommendations are expected by the end of March.

Education:
Currently there are 21 students enrolled in the GSLC program with 3 possible referrals. We are using substitutes as needed to ensure that the program is properly staffed (budget neutral). The Case Manager position left open in December will be filled by mid-March.

Troy has been spending time with area schools observing their middle school and high school alternative education programs. Additionally, Troy attended a conference to learn more about RISC (reinventing schools coalition) which is a school model that Commissioner Gendron is encouraging Maine schools to adopt.   Troy did have an opportunity to chat briefly with the Commissioner after the conference just to let her know that Good Will-Hinckley is still in operation with a successful day school program.

In March we are scheduled to be a host site for the YBOA (youth basketball of America) tournament. In exchange for the use of the Recreation Center GWH will get 100% of admission proceeds.

GSLC has been invited by Winslow and Warsaw Middle School’s JMG Project Reach program to submit a request for project money. This philanthropic initiative is sponsored by the Unity Foundation to expose and educate students across the state in the grant making process.

On Friday February 12th nine GSLC students went to East Pond and had a great day of ice fishing. For many of our students this was a first time experience. A special thanks to Mr. Reese for hosting and to Mr. Andre for his willingness (and ability) to drill holes in the thick ice.

Eye Opening Statistic of the Month: The 12 million students who are projected to drop out over the next decade will cost our economy more than 3 trillion dollars. (Paris: Education at a Glance, 2007)

Physical Plant:
·         Patching and painting corridors at Averill High School  is in process.
·         The forest thinning operation is still in process.
·         Bishop Auditorium is getting a ‘freshening up’ to get ready for several paid functions that have been booked beginning this Spring (molding replacement, skim coat of paint, etc.)

Information Technology:
·         The new web site is “live” and a secure member site is in beta testing (will be testing with a small group shortly).
·         MSLN (our internet service provider) has completed negotiations with carriers and we will be experiencing a 10x increase in our internet speed connection beginning this summer!

Development:
Pat Zlotin is chairing the Annual Fund drive, which we affectionately call The Beaver Campaign – He works when he works; he plays when he plays; he is strong on individual efforts; yet labors for community good! It has been wonderful to talk with many of our supporters and catch up with them. Readers if we do not have your up-to-date contact information please send it to Natalie at njones@gwh.org and please consider GWH for a donation – send a check or money order to “Good Will-Hinckley, PO Box 159, Hinckley, ME 04944”. Thank you in advance for your support!

January 2010

Overview:
The Board of Directors met on Saturday, January 23, 2010. The meeting covered all areas of business including:

General:
Our holiday Concert at the Chapel went very well. There were approximately 175 attendees and we brought in $380.85 at the door. Luke is in the process of editing the recording of the concert to send Vivienne at Colby some of the performance pieces. We will also have slices of the recording to consider including in our future website design and for development and marketing purposes.

Our next Concert at the Chapel is Sunday, February 21st at 3:00. It is a Music from Colby event featuring Nordica Trio. The varied program will highlight works that feature the viola. Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio is an early masterpiece for viola, clarinet and piano, and will open the program. In addition, Graybert Beacham and Martin Perry will perform Rebecca Clarke’s Sonata for Viola and Piano, written in 1919 by one of the twentieth-century’s true musical pioneers. The second half of the program will be devoted to the romantic music of Max Bruch: selections from his Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano and the lyrical Double Concerto for Clarinet and Viola.

Natalie is scheduled to attend the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) rally in Brooksville, FL February 4th through the 7th. She is taking this opportunity to schedule visits with other friends of Good Will-Hinckley and plans to be on the road for about ten days. An alumni donor has offered to cover Lisa McGowan’s plane ticket to join her at the rally to assist in covering the booth. This trip will not be an expense on the Good Will-Hinckley budget. We are using personal and alumni donations, American Express points and the good will of friends to achieve this goal.

Natalie has also been invited to the FMCA rally in Vermont in July. They have graciously offered to cover my hotel room and ticket to the banquet. Good Will-Hinckley will be allowed a booth and I will be given a few minutes to speak at their dinner. The FMCA/Maine Wheels group is scheduled to be on campus May 20th through the 23rd and we look forward to spending some time with them as our campus is their origination site.

Troy and Natalie attended the Skowhegan Rotary meeting in December and had a wonderful time. It was their first ‘public’ event together on behalf of GWH and it went well. They have been invited back in the future for updates as we make decisions about how we are going to navigate the future of our organization.

Bob Berry and Natalie attended a portion of the Agricultural Trades Show at the Augusta Civic Center. They split up to cover different portions of the events to see what the trends and issues are in Maine agriculture today.

Update from the Strategic Action Committee (SAC):
The SAC has completed several meetings and reports regularly to the GWH Board.   The majority of the data gathering in the form of meetings with people and groups in the community has been completed. The effort in these meetings has been to explore options for GWH to leverage our resources, diversify our revenue streams and change our business model to contribute to the core mission to “provide a home and a helping hand”. Results of the survey will be distributed to participants in February. The committee is on schedule to provide a ‘Recommendations Report’ to the board in February/March.

Education:
There have been no major changes to the enrollment for GSLC since last month and we are currently reviewing referral applications. We had one student successfully transition back to their sending school after the New Year!

We know we do good work but it is always nice to hear it from a consumer. We recently received a call from a parent of a former student who transitioned back to his sending school district last year. She called to thank us and tell us how great her boy is doing in school. She voluntarily gave us permission to use her as a positive reference for the program and gave us a few quotes that we plan to use to promote the GSLC programJ

The students continue to enjoy their Outdoor Experience activities and thanks to Kathy Hunt and her family they are well protected from the elements. The Hunt family collected three Santa sack sized bags of winter gear from friends and neighbors. Thanks again to Kathy and her girls!

On December 10th Natalie and Troy attended a Philanthropy Webinar via invite from the Unity Foundation. Stewardship was a major theme. Continue to provide support to the Strategic Action Committee through contact sheets and giving tours to groups interested in our available resources.

On December 21, we hosted a “Holiday Cheer” open house at Marten Bank from 3:00-5:00 for all employees. Eighteen attended the festive event which was no cost to Good Will-Hinckley.

Troy’s eye Jpening statistic for the month: 3,800 students did not graduate from Maine’s High Schools in 2009, the lost lifetime earnings in Maine for that class of dropouts alone total nearly 1 Billion dollars. (Alliance for Excellence in Education, 2009)

Physical Plant:
·         Maintenance has winterized all the unoccupied buildings with some heated at a minimum and others heating the basements only. All buildings have low temperatures monitored by Seacoast Security and are visited by regularly.
·         Houles Plumbing & Heating installed one new boiler in AHS, have made repairs to the furnace at Fir Lodge and will repair the Swasey second boiler soon.
·         Eastern Sprinkler has installed a sprinkler system in Grange Cottage in preparation for rental.
·         We have experienced some heating problems with AHS, Prescott, Fir, and Moody Chapel, however, nothing major.
·         All occupied buildings have Carbon Monoxide Detectors installed.
·         Snow removal has kept staff busy for several days.
·         Patching and painting corridors at AHS is in process.
·         The forest thinning in accordance with the forestry plan is still in process.

Information Technology:
The Board approved a new website design for Good Will-Hinckley. It will be ‘live’ soon – please check it out at www.gwh.org!

December 2009

Overview:

The Board of Directors met on Saturday, December 5, 2009.   The meeting covered all areas of business including:

General:

Our holiday concert made the front page of the local section in the Morning Sentinel and Duane Burbank was nicely quoted on our commitment to next year's Festival of Trees.   Readers, a list of people who would like to volunteer for the event is being kept for Duane and his volunteers to contact after the first of the year - call Natalie Jones at 238-4004 if you're interested.   The Colby College   Linda Collinson and other volunteers are working hard to pull this evening together and I encourage everyone to attend and please bring a friend.

Music department head, Vivian, has been working with us on putting together a lovely evening of music on Friday, December 18th at 6:00 pm.

Natalie Jones and Troy Frost are scheduled to speak at the Skowhegan Rotary in December - thank you for coordinating this Howard Sevey.   The entire leadership team continues to have many 'informal' communications with local community members as well as attending more formal meetings/events.

Update from the Strategic Action Committee (SAC):

The SAC has completed several meetings and reports regularly to the GWH Board.    Data gathering in the form of meetings with people and groups in the community continue.   The effort in these meetings is to explore options for GWH to leverage our resources, diversify our revenue streams and change our business model to contribute to the core mission to "provide a home and a helping hand".   Results from the web survey are expected by the end of December.   The committee is on schedule to provide a 'Recommendations Report' to the board in February/March

Education:

There are no major changes to the enrollment for GSLC since last month - current enrollment 17.   We continue to receive referrals and inquiries.   Natalie Jones, Anna Perkins, and Troy Frost are meeting with area special education directors who refer students to our program.

We find that many of our students perceive themselves as social outcasts and have very low self-esteem.   One of our primary goals with each student is to provide enriched experiences to help foster a more positive self image.   Toward this end students attend a variety of therapeutic group sessions that challenge them to improve their social interaction skills.   We know from our interactions with students that many spend their entire amount of free time outside of school isolating themselves in front of computer or gaming screens.   They rarely actively engage with peers, the outdoors or their community outside of school.   This school year, GSLC is offering an "Outdoor Experience" class.   Our staff has a variety of interests and a profound enjoyment of the great outdoors of Maine and they model this relationship for our students.  To support this effort, a few of our education staff submitted a letter to some retailers requesting donations of winter gear and apparel which would allow our "Outdoor Experience" class to enjoy a wider variety of activities on campus.   Our own Kathy Hunt has been busy coordinating a Coats for Kids drive in her neighborhood for our students.

The teachers spent November 23 as an in-service day getting a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention refresher, some tips on writing Individual Education Plans (IEP), and updating their Professional Teacher Action Plans.

Troy attended the Maine Principal's conference, a regional Alternative Education Association meeting, and the Maine Rising Task Force conference

Troy's eye opening statistic for the month is: high school dropouts are eight times as likely to go to prison as compared to graduates.

Physical Plant:

Bob Berry's team continues to winterize and button up buildings for the upcoming winter season!   We have received 13 boiler sections under warrantee and they will be installed at Averill High and Swasey this month.   We have also installed an additional door on the second floor corridor at the high school to maintain a lower temperature in the unused space and save fuel costs.

The winter equipment (plows, sanders, etc.) was prepared and ready to go!   The installation of three new road gates is completed and they add another layer of security to the accessibility of the campus.   We are still working on the sale of vehicles.   The forestry thinning is progressing according to plan.   There have been and continue to be prospects, tours and proposals involving our physical plant.

We continue to book weddings and concerts at Moody Chapel.   Readers, please check our website periodically regarding concerts at the Chapel - after the Chapel Concert on December 18th, we have a Colby Community Concert on February 21, 2010!

Development:

Pat Zlotin is chairing the Annual Fund drive, which we affectionately call The Beaver Campaign - He works when he works; he plays when he plays; he is strong on individual efforts; yet labors for community good!   All of the letters and emails have been sent out and we have begun making phone calls.   It has been wonderful to talk with many of our supporters and catch up with them.   Readers if we do not have your up-to-date contact information, please send it to Natalie at njones@gwh.org and please consider GWH for a donation - send a check or money order to "Good Will-Hinckley, PO Box 159, Hinckley, ME   04944".   Thank you in advance for your support!

Museum:

The Board approved an ad-hoc Museum Committee.   The Committee will focus on providing guidance on the policies, procedures and operations of the Museum moving forward.   The expectation is that a formal Museum Committee will be considered at the annual meeting.   The current Museum Advisory group will consider joining the Board Museum Committee and Don Marden will assign a Board Member to the Committee
